The
new Shipley Athletic Center at the Dana Hall School in Wellesley MA.,
will house an Olympic size swimming pool, squash and racquetball courts,
full size gymnasium and a weight and fitness center.
Construction
manager Shawmut Design and Construction awarded the site work to SEL in
March 2004. Our crews quickly began the task of excavating 15,000 cy of
soils and 7,500 cy of ledge. Due to the restraints of the nearby school
and horse boarding facility, our blasting subcontractor carefully
formulated a blast plan that ensured their operations would continue
without interruption. With blasting completed in just 3 weeks, our
excavation crew led by Rick Donoghue excavated down over 20 feet below
grade for the footings and swimming pool. Vaughn Barsamian and Kevin
Patten operated our 400 Komatsu and 290 Volvo excavators while a fleet
of 10 trucks hauled surplus materials from the site. Fernando Ortiz with
the Cat 960 Loader kept a steady supply of crushed stone coming to
laborers Mike Santry and Joe Cantelli as they graded for the eight foot
wide concrete footings. The pipe crew led by Skip Martin and Mark
Allison along with Henry Oliviera and Al Buckless installed a 2100 lf
drainage system and 1700 lf of water main. Cesar Pereira and his crew of
Mario Sousa, Mike Borges, Roger Johnson and Ken McGill installed over
12,500 cy of compacted structural fill under the new gymnasium floor
slab.
This
project will be completed during the summer of 2005 when our crews will
install curbing and sidewalks, landscape and final pave.
